Types of Smoking Pipes

Smoking pipes are categorized on the basis of the material and shape which also have influence upon the aesthetics of a smoke.

Briar Pipes: The most common types, the Briar, can be machine made or hand-made. Briar is a very good wood for making pipes. It is naturally resistant to fire and has a good ability to absorb moisture. Thus, it can absorb moisture which results due to combustion. Briar is obtained from the root burl of the tree heath found in Mediterranean regions. Two types of blocks are cut from the center and the outer part of root burl- ebauchon & plateaux. Meerschaum Pipes: This hydrated magnesium silicate, found only in central Turkey, can be molded into many decorative figures. “Meerschaum” means “sea foam” in German, suggesting its natural white color and very low weight. It is very porous and absorbs elements of the tobacco during smoking process, and gradually changes color to become golden brown. However, sometimes such pipes are also made from meerschaum dust collected after carving and mixed with an emulsifier. It is then pressed into shape of a pipe. These are low quality meerschaum pipes that are not absorbent, do not color, and lack the smoking quality of the block carved pipe.

Clay Pipes: Pipes made of fine white clay are of good quality. Pipes made from porcelain slip poured into a mold have lower quality which impart unwanted flavors to smoke. Making clay pipes is a labor intensive process. All the air has to be beaten out of the clay and then each pipe is hand-rolled before molding. They are then pierced with a fine wire before careful firing. They tend to become hot while using and as such less preferable for actual smoking.

Calabash Pipes: Made from Calabash gourds, sometimes from mahogany wood, they have their own classic shape. Those made of gourds are very expensive. They usually have meerschaum or porcelain bowls set inside them. There’s also an air chamber beneath the bowl which is for cooling, drying, and mellowing the smoke. A well finished pipe gives one of the coolest, driest smokes available.

Metal Pipes: Although uncommon, metal is still used for making pipes. The popular one is a pipe with a stem and shank of aluminum, serving as a heat sink. Mouthpieces are made from vulcanite or lucite. Other metal tobacco pipes are the Japanese kiseru and the Arabian midwakh. Hookahs also have metal stems, but they are categorized as water pipes.

Hookahs: These are typical middle eastern water pipes which cool the smoke by filtering it through a liquid chamber. Many hookahs have multiple mouth pieces so that many people may enjoy the tobacco simultaneously. The tobacco used in the hookah is usually dried whole leaf, soaked and crumbled, or canned, mixed with various herbs & flavors sometimes with ice, lemon juice or even milk. The moist tobacco is heaped into the bowl and covered with a small charcoal fire.

Hookah is quickly gaining popularity throughout the world in this day and age.  Everyone from college students to grandparents partake in this middle-eastern smoke pipe ritual.  Although smoking hookah is a generally relaxing and fun experience, there a few things you should know before partaking.

Here are some rules and tips to have the most enjoyable hookah experience.

If you have to fill your Hookah bowl with tobacco make sure not to stuff it full with tobacco.  Make sure to keep in mind that you need some room for airflow.

When you place the foil on top of the Hookah bowl puncture the foil with a tooth pic starting in the center and making a spiral circle pattern.  Imagine a very neat, round shot gun blast pattern.

Do not fill the water compartment fully with water.  Fill it halfway.  You can also add ice if you would like your smoke to feel cold when going down.

Never light your cigarette from the hookah coals, it’s considered very bad manners.

Use the hookah hose with your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean in many countries.

When pulling the smoke make sure to inhale the smoke and hold it for at least 6-10 seconds in order to feel the effects of the tobacco and the syrup (it provides a sugar high).  After doing this you should be slightly buzzed and in a relaxed state.

When sharing a hookah, place the hose down on the table after you are done toking for the next person to pick up. Don’t pass it directly. If you must pass, use the RIGHT HAND with the tip facing towards you, not the recipient. Turn the hookah toward the recipient or have the hookah placed in a neutral position to prevent tipping. Sometimes the hose is so long that this isn’t an issue.

Use the tongs or (your fingers, be careful though!) to occasionally tap the coals in the tray on the stem to remove ash and keep the coals hot. Replace the coals to a different position on the bowl.

If you are using a multiple hose hookah plug your mouthpiece with a finger so that the person smoking doesn’t **** air.

Many people suggest using punctured foil on top of your bowl underneath the coals. Excessive Aluminum in the body causes Alzheimer’s. Smoking from household aluminum isn’t good for you! Don’t be afraid of smoking from aluminum once in a while, but don’t make it a habit; don’t use household foil on your personal hookah. There is foil available made especially for hookahs. You can also use a screen meant specifically for hookahs. The latter is recommended, but your bowl will last much longer with foil if the holes are punctured correctly.

With the tongs (or fingers), move the coals around the screen occasionally to allow for even burning of the tobacco throughout the session. The center of the bowl should be the place the coals are concentrated.

Some prefer to make Hookah a competitive activity to see who can blow the most smoke (literally).  Most, however, use Hookah time as a very relazing and leisurely time to spend with friends.  The choice is yours. The tobacco lasts a long time so enjoy it. It is suggested that one Hookah be shared among no more than three people. Some lounges enforce the two people per Hookah rule.  If you have a Hookah in your home you, obviously, make the rules.

When in a Hookah lounge don’t smoke cigarettes unless ashtrays are provided. Take the hint – If there are no ashtrays, then cigarette smoking is probably not allowed, but ask first before lighting up. They may have ashtrays behind the counter for you or they may say no cigarette smoking is allowed in certain areas. 

DO NOT use the coal tray for your cigarette ashes.

A regular cleaning regimen will prevent this. Make sure that you have a nargile cleaning brush among your nargile accessories.

A Quick Guide to nargile Cleaning

It’s actually not difficult to clean a nargile. Make sure you use very hot water to clean the vase and stem, and that you never use water on the hoses unless they are made of washable plastic. Most importantly, however, remember that you can never use soap to clean a nargile; the residue will alter the flavor of the smoke.  You can use a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda.

To clean the vase, simply empty it, fill it with hot water, and scrub it with a nargile cleaning brush. The stem is even simpler to clean: just run very hot tap water through it, until the water runs clear. As for the hoses, carefully detach them from the nargile, and then blow strongly through them to clear away any particles and dirt. It’s best to do this outdoors.

Once your nargile’s parts are cleaned, let them dry thoroughly. The best way to get them fully dry is to let them sit overnight on a towel. They’ll be ready again by morning. Another point to remember: always let the nargile dry thoroughly before you smoke it again; the only water in the pipe while smoking should be at the bottom of the vase.

Some professors believe that smoking shisha, the tobacco used in hookahs, is much worse than cigarettes. They say that because there is more cubic volume of smoke inhaled in a tobacco, that smoking hookah is worse. Also, they mention that there is considerably more tar than cigarettes. I am not saying that smoking a hookah healthy or good for you, because it isn’t. I am here to make a point that it is better off to smoke a hookah than a cigarette.

Let me first make a note that shisha is the tobacco that you smoke, and a hookah is what you smoke the shisha with. Shisha is a tobacco leaf with either glycerine or honey added, along with the flavoring (i.e. apple, kiwi, or orange). Shisha has no additives like cigarettes do. Some brands of shisha actually wash the tobacco, so there is a reduced amount of nicotine! Cigarette companies are the ones who ADD nicotine into their cigarettes to make them as addictive as possible.

For the topic of Tar in shisha, there is no Tar. Zero. I am unaware how the people researching the affects of smoking shisha in a hookah, but they must be doing something wrong to conclude that there is more tar in hookah smoke. Unlike cigarettes or cigars, shisha is a wet tobacco. It is covered in a molasses or glycerine and flavoring. Cigarettes are dry, and they BURN. Shisha is baked at around 300 degrees from the coals. There are more carcinogens in cigarettes because of this drastic difference in temperature.

I am not advocating that smoking hookah is healthy. Like many things in life, if you take in moderation it will not affect or harm you. Alcohol for example can ruin lives. Over consumption can cause ill effects, and even death. There are a lot of people who drive under the influence every day. Yet, it is said that having a glass of wine a night is healthy. Over consumption of fast food can lead to clogged arteries and obesity. Cigarettes have additives in them, and cases of people not being able to successfully quit are a reality.

The Brainwashing of the American Investor has its own tale of an Alice whose “logic and proportion” had “fallen sloppy dead”. Many years ago, when interest rates soared into double digits, elderly Alice was well advised to invest her stash in a portfolio of Ginnie Maes. Smiling broadly, she bragged to her friends about the federally guaranteed 13% interest she was receiving in regular monthly intervals— much more than she needed to cover her living expenses.

But interest rates continued to move higher, and the decreasing market value of her Ginnie Maes was more than she could tolerate. “If rates continue to go up, I’ll have nothing left” she cried to her White Knight financial advisor who suggested patience and understanding. The very same pill that made her income grow larger was also making her market value become smaller. But the income kept rolling in, higher yielding unit trusts were purchased with the excess, and major redemptions were nowhere to be seen. The income kept growing, the market value kept shrinking, and Alice was seeing red from seeing red on her account statements.

So Alice went to her local bank and traded in her absolutely government guaranteed 13 per centers for some laddered, non-negotiable, 8.5% CDs. “No more erosion of my nest egg”, she toasted proudly with the hookah smoking bank caterpillar who orchestrated her move to lower income levels. Within a few months, she was liquidating CDs to pay the bills that never seemed to be a problem with those terrible Ginnie Maes.

Don’t let such uninformed thinking sabotage your retirement program; don’t let the selfish advice of a product sharpshooter send you chasing rabbits when IRE (interest rate expectations) or other temporary market conditions shrink the market value of your income portfolio. Feed your head; feed—your—head. Income pays the bills, and if the income level is both steady and adequate, there is no need to change investments. Market value should be used to determine when to buy more (at lower prices) and when to take profits (at higher ones). It is almost never necessary to take a loss on a high quality (government guaranteed in Alice’s case) income security.

More recent experimenters in much more sophisticated potions have addressed the issue with similar results, reaching mind-numbing conclusions such as these: 1) I know that my income has actually grown throughout the debacle in the financial sector but I don’t want to buy anymore of these securities until the prices go back above what I paid for them originally. Translation: I’d rather stick with my 4.5% tax-free yield than increase it by adding to my positions at lower prices.

2) Sure, I understand the relationship between IRE and the prices of income CEFs but individual bonds and Treasuries haven’t suffered nearly as much. That’s where we should have been. Translation: I would be much happier with 3% stability than with an 8% rate of realized spending money. 3) I’m tired of seeing all the negative positions in my portfolio. Let’s keep all the income we receive in money market until we’re back in positive territory. Translation: I’d rather accept 1.5% or so than reduce my cost basis and compound my yield by adding to my positions at lower prices.

Modern brokerage firm monthly statement “pills” were developed during the dot-com drug era, when Wall Street was trying to emphasize the brilliance of its speculative prescriptions by making us all feel ten feet tall, month after month after month—. But the geniuses on the institutional chessboard produced too many mushroom product varietals causing the red correction queen to lop off many of their sacred heads. The papers that were designed to make our chests burst with pride have turned on us as a haunting reminder of the reality of markets and the cycles that push them in either direction.

It should be easy to navigate a quality income portfolio through whatever circumstances, cycles, and scandals come at you, but a clear head and a clearer understanding of what to expect is required. Most brokerage firm statements make it difficult to monitor asset allocation using any methodology, including the Working Capital Model, and I don’t think that it’s by chance. Most income investors expect income securities to have stable market values. Constant confusion breeds unhappiness, unhappiness foments change, and the masters of the universe encourage you to fritter around from mushroom to mushroom in perpetual emotional chaos. To who’s benefit?

It would be wonderful if an investor’s monthly statement would organize his securities based on their class and purpose, but Wall Street doesn’t want such distinctions to be made easily. It would be great if the institutions would help investors formulate reasonable expectations about what will happen to the market values of their securities in varying market place conditions, but that’s not likely to become a reality any time soon. It would spectacular if the media would produce information and explanation instead of news bites and sensationalism, but you guessed it— not much chance of that either.

E-smoking started gaining momentum around February of 2007 though it originates in 2003 when a company known as “SBT Investment Holdings Limited” – acquired Best Partners Worldwide Limited – the former entity that was established for the manufacturing and sales of electronic cigarettes.

This Group took an active position in developing the market under the brand name of Ruyan in 2004. Hon Lik of Ruyan – in China, created the simply named “E-cigarette” being the name brand first associated with the product of this genre. This company, located in Futian District, Shenzhen China invented the first non-combustion (smokeless) cigarette available. Ruyan did and still does work hard to patent, distribute and commercialize the e-cigarette.

Ruyan’s original intention was not to make a full time smoking alternative, but rather something to use only when one was in a non-smoking area. Now we have turned the device into a full time hobby to substitute for regular cigarettes which is considerably better for you. Ruyan is distributed in the United States through Sun Ridge Distribution Incorporated. Some say Ruyan e-cigs are the Cadillac of e-smokes, others say it’s a high priced mediocre experience.

Ruyan also has a distributor named Ruyan America in Minneapolis. The Ruyan motto is oddly “Until you quit, show you care”. It’s an alternative, like pipe smoking, or hookah smoking, or chewing tobacco. The flavor of an e-cigarette is similar; but not quite to that of a burnt tobacco cigarette because it’s hard to mimic the gross burning flavor we all grew to love. We would say that they taste much more like a hookah then anything else on the market, but it sure isn’t a hookah or any kind of bong or water pipe. It’s an electronic cigarette.

Today E-cigs are fast gaining popularity, but many sources are working against it and as a result it may become a rare hobby. The sources claim it needs to be regulated and might cause more harm then good. More harm then a regular cigarette apparently.
