The artist, Paul-Désiré Trouillebert was best known for his portraits and landscapes, however Trouillebert also painted in a style now known as Orientalism, which is demonstrated well by this painting.
Obviously, in this case the subject matter is harem “slave girl” who carries a Hookah (also called a Narghile ) for her Master. For those who aren’t totally familiar with Hookahs, they are basically a water-pipe made up of a body, bowl, hose, and mouthpiece. Here you can see that the long hose wraps up around the stem of the Hookah in several loops.
